ASTDD is a national nonprofit membership organization that brings together state and territorial oral health leaders from across the country. We strengthen public health programs, connect professionals, create opportunities for learning and leadership, and help our members do their best work.

You do not need a background in dentistry or oral health to succeed in this role.

We are implementing a new Strategic Framework, expanding our membership and engagement efforts, developing new leadership and professional development opportunities, and building the organizational infrastructure that will support our next chapter.

About the Role

The Manager of Membership, Education & Programming will serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for ASTDD's nearly 600 members. This is a highly visible, relationship-driven role for someone who enjoys getting to know and interacting with people, creating positive experiences, and helping a professional community thrive.

You'll work directly with members, volunteer leaders, committees, speakers, partners, and ASTDD leadership. On any given day, you might welcome a new member, brainstorm ways to increase engagement, facilitate a committee discussion, help a volunteer leader move an idea forward, coordinate an educational program, analyze membership trends, or develop a new opportunity to connect members across the country.

We're looking for someone who brings energy to the room—even when the room is virtual.

The right person is approachable, responsive, and collaborative. You should enjoy working with people just as much as you enjoy keeping projects on track and getting things done.

What You'll Do

Membership & Relationship Building

• • Serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for nearly 600 members and help create a welcoming, responsive, and engaging member experience
  • Build ongoing relationships with state and territorial oral health leaders and help members connect with ASTDD resources, opportunities, colleagues, and leadership
  • Manage member recruitment, onboarding, renewals, engagement, and retention
  • Develop creative strategies to strengthen member participation and belonging
  • Serve as the functional lead for membership use of ASTDD's Association Management System (AMS)/CRM, including member data, engagement tracking, communications, renewals, and reporting
  • Help identify, recruit, engage, and develop members/volunteer leaders for committees, Communities of Practice, mentorship activities, and other opportunities

Committees & Communities

• • Build strong working relationships with committee chairs and member/volunteer leaders and help them turn ideas and priorities into action
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison for assigned committees
  • Facilitate, coordinate, and manage up to four committees, including agenda development, meeting facilitation, follow-through, and tracking deliverables
  • Facilitate approximately two Communities of Practice each month, helping spark conversations and connections among participants

Education & Professional Development

• • Plan and manage one to two continuing education programs each month
  • Identify compelling topics and speakers and coordinate program logistics, communications, and CE requirements
  • Design and manage a peer mentorship program for new state and territorial dental directors and oral health program leaders
  • Gather participant feedback, evaluate program effectiveness, and continually improve ASTDD's educational experiences

Programs & Projects

• • Manage timelines, priorities, deliverables, and budgets across membership, education, and programming activities
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to help develop and implement ASTDD's annual organizational workplan
  • Develop member communications, program announcements, and educational resources in coordination with communications staff
  • Collaborate across ASTDD's staff, consultants, volunteers, partners, and ASTDD Foundation on organizational initiatives
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and take initiative to help move good ideas forward

Who We're Looking For

Dental, oral health, and clinical experience are not required. We'll help you learn our field, our members, and our organization.

What matters most:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
• Three to five years of experience in membership, training, program management, association management, or a comparable role
• Experience facilitating committees, workgroups, or volunteer-led groups
• Working knowledge of an AMS or CRM, and experience in a fully remote environment
• Strong organization and project-management skills with the ability to keep multiple initiatives moving at once
• A warm, professional communication style and genuine enthusiasm for meeting and working with others
• Interpersonal communication skills and comfort working with a wide range of personalities, professional backgrounds, and leadership styles
• Excellent follow-through and a reputation for being dependable
• Curiosity, creativity, and the initiative to suggest new ideas

State and Territorial Oral Health Programs (S/TOHPs) are governmental public health programs, offices, units, or functions within U.S. state and territorial health agencies that are responsible for assessing, promoting, protecting, and improving the oral health of the populations they serve. S/TOHPs provide leadership for population-based oral health efforts and may conduct or coordinate activities such as surveillance and assessment, policy development, prevention and health promotion, access-to-care initiatives, workforce development, partnerships, program implementation and evaluation, and integration of oral health across public health systems. They often convene, facilitate, and provide the leadership necessary to collaborate with partners, stakeholders, community members, advocates, and champions to assess, promote, and advance oral health throughout their jurisdiction.
