For over 15 years, Gender Justice has been at the forefront of the fight for reproductive freedom and LGBTQ+ rights in the Upper Midwest. Gender Justice is a 501(c)3 nonprofit legal and policy advocacy organization working to advance gender equity through the law in Minnesota and North Dakota.

About the Board of Directors:
The Gender Justice Board of Directors provides fiduciary oversight of our organization, mission-based leadership, fundraising support, strategic governance, and advice to the Executive Director.
Board members help our organization be the most impactful we can be by providing strategic and financial leadership, shaping programming priorities, and amplifying our mission. We need every voice at our table — bringing your skills, lived experience, and energy to our mission.
To the best of their abilities, Board members deliver:
Leadership
- Ensure the mission of Gender Justice is well understood and embraced by the board, management, and other key stakeholders, and ensure congruence between decisions and core values.
Focus on organizational strategic priorities and dedicate resources to achieve goals.
Honor Gender Justice’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities GJ serves, and ensure that board recruitment meets the needs of the organization.
Represent Gender Justice to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization.
Participation
- Take part in the oversight of management and operations of the organization.
- Prepare in advance and attend meetings of the board; ask questions, exercise independent judgment, and request information to take responsibility for making decisions on issues, policies and other board matters.
- Support fundraising and community engagement through donor cultivation, relationship building, events, and other activities.
- Contribute to the hiring and the ongoing evaluation and annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as they lead the organization and implement Gender Justice’s strategic plan.
Time Commitment
Board Members are expected to commit to a three-year term, with a maximum of two terms. The average monthly board member commitment is 5 hours per month—which includes:
- 6 Board meetings per year - Meetings are conducted on a hybrid basis.
- Attend and actively participate in board meetings, committees, and organizational events.
- New Board member orientation
- Annual Board retreat
Skills, Professional and Lived Experiences:
We welcome candidates with diverse professional and personal backgrounds and experiences. We are especially interested in individuals who bring expertise, knowledge, or experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Candidates in Minnesota and North Dakota.
- Candidates with experience as an executive director
- Candidates with Lived experience related to the intersectional issues we work on.
- Fundraising/Philanthropy
- Public Policy and Advocacy
- Strategic planning
- Communications / Public Relations
- Youth / Student organizing
- Adult education
- Nonprofit financial management
- Athletics and professional sports
- Attorney candidates with experience in employment and/or civil rights litigation
- Attorney candidates from mid to large sized firms and/or from corporate legal departments
Coalition-management, meeting facilitation, group facilitation
Process and timeline:
- Complete an application by Friday, October 23, 2026.
- Final candidates will be interviewed in November.
- New members will be voted in onDecember 15, 2026, and notified shortly thereafter.
