Scholastic Chess Instructor

The Saint Louis Chess Club is seeking a passionate professional candidate to work in the role of Chess Instructor, traveling to teach in classrooms across the Saint Louis region. The ideal candidate should have a background in both education and chess, an enthusiasm for working with students, and strong communication skills. Success in this position requires passion for promoting the game of chess and for educating students. The Chess Instructor will be entrusted with the planning of chess lessons, delivering high-quality instruction, and assessing students’ progress towards learning objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Travel to various schools around the region, teaching the game of chess and fostering a positive learning environment and good sportsmanship
• Implement chess lesson plans from our curriculum, contributing to students’ overall social-emotional, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Provide thorough instruction on a wide array of chess topics, ranging from basic rules to intermediate strategies and concepts
• Assess student performance and progress in chess, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and tailoring future lessons to meet learning needs
• Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment that encourages respectful competition
• Regularly communicate with school partners and classroom teachers about students’ chess progress, ensuring they are informed and involved in the students’ chess learning journey
• Continually work to improve teaching skills and chess knowledge, including participation in professional development events and training
• Willingness to participate in non-class events; including representing the Saint Louis Chess Club at community events promoting our programs or working as staff at scholastic chess tournaments
• Continuous and prompt attention to departmental communications; including phone calls, text messages, and email

Qualifications & Competencies

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills (Required)

• Working with students aged K-12: 1 year (Preferred)
• Basic understanding of chess rules and concepts (Preferred)

Compensation and Benefits

• Part time, non-exempt
• Starting instruction pay at $25.00 per hour
• Starting training and event pay at $17.00 per hour
• Expected hours: 5 – 30 per week

This role reports directly to the Scholastic Manager.

This role is located in the Saint Louis metropolitan area, requiring travel to schools and classrooms to teach.
