WHO WE ARE

The Spartanburg Philharmonic is the largest professional performing arts organization in Spartanburg, with roots reaching back to the 1880s. Our mission is to enrich, inspire, and educate the Spartanburg community through live performances of high-quality music.

Today, the Philharmonic presents a diverse range of programs and community initiatives, including the Zimmerli (Classics) Series, Espresso Series, Bluegrass Spartanburg, Music Sandwiched In, Spartanburg Music Trail, Spartanburg Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and Link Up, a partnership with Carnegie Hall. In addition to our ticketed concert season, the Philharmonic engages the community through free performances, educational programs, partnerships, and outreach throughout the Upstate.

The organization is entering an exciting period of growth as we look toward our 100th season and the next century of music-making in Spartanburg.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Director of Development is a key member of the Spartanburg Philharmonic leadership team and works closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Fund Development Committee to advance the organization's philanthropic goals.

The Director of Development leads and manages a comprehensive fundraising program with primary responsibility for individual giving, the Annual Fund, corporate sponsorships, donor cultivation and stewardship, and other development initiatives. The successful candidate will be a confident relationship builder who enjoys connecting people to an organization's mission and can develop meaningful, long-term relationships with donors, subscribers, businesses, community partners, and volunteers. Corporate Sponsorship & Business Development

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate sponsors and advertisers.

  • Develop sponsorship proposals and presentations tailored to the goals and interests of prospective corporate partners.

  • Maintain strong relationships with existing corporate sponsors and identify opportunities for renewal and increased support.

  • Work with the Executive Director and appropriate staff to develop sponsorship benefits, recognition, and fulfillment.

Major Gifts & Donor Cultivation

  • Build and maintain a portfolio of individual donors and prospects.

  • Develop and implement individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.

  • Coordinate donor meetings, events, tours, backstage experiences, and other opportunities that deepen engagement with the Philharmonic.

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board members on major donor cultivation and solicitation.

Board & Fund Development Committee Support

  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Fund Development Committee.

  • Partner with the Executive Director and Committee Chair to coordinate meetings, agendas, communications, fundraising priorities, and follow-up.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Demonstrated experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, advancement, marketing, or a related field.

  2. Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.

  3. Demonstrated ability in handling multiple priorities, project management and meeting deadlines with strong planning and organizational skills.

  4. A genuine appreciation for music and the arts is a plus, but a background in music is not required. We are seeking a development professional who is excited by the opportunity to connect people with the transformative power of the Spartanburg Philharmonic.

WORK SCHEDULE: This is a full-time position reporting to the Executive Director. The role requires occasional evening and weekend work, including attendance at Philharmonic concerts, donor events, community activities, and other organizational events.
