A planetary vehicle for sustainable innovations since 2008
The Sustainability Laboratory is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) research, development, and educational organization based in New York. It was established in 2008 to develop and demonstrate groundbreaking approaches to sustainability—expanding prospects and producing positive, life-affirming impacts on people and ecosystems across the world. Lab activities are guided by its own unique, holistic, and action-oriented conceptual framework―The Lab’s signature approach―that integrates systems thinking, system-based design, an original theory of change, and a rigorous definition of sustainability into five core guiding principles. This framework provides the basis for all Lab initiatives: development projects and educational programs alike. Since its inception, The Lab has gained national and international recognition for its innovative contributions to the global sustainability agenda.
The Lab’s flagship project is Project Wadi Attir, a sustainable development initiative with a Bedouin community in the Negev Desert that demonstrates an approach to sustainable dryland agriculture that leverages Bedouin traditional values and experience with modern-day science and cutting-edge technologies. It also hosts an annual graduate-level sustainability fellowship for young professionals, the Global Sustainability Fellows Program.
