About Alight
Alight is a proximity-driven humanitarian organization that restores power and agency to people experiencing displacement. For nearly 50 years, we've walked alongside our customers, displaced communities, in some of the most challenging and complex places in the world. We center the choices, dignity and lived experience of the people we serve, even when it complicates the work.
Alight's purpose is to inspire and unleash abundance in every person. Our mission is to build a meaningful life for and with the displaced: not just meeting basic needs, but building lives filled with joy, dignity and connection. We co-create solutions hand in hand with the communities we serve, because they know best what they need.
About the U.S. Enterprise team
Alight U.S. connects New Americans in the Twin Cities to the networks, resources and knowledge they need to navigate employment, education and other U.S. systems. We serve all New Americans: anyone born outside the United States, and their children.
The Role
The Community Skill-Building Guide gets New Americans into the trainings that come before the job: digital literacy certificates, a PCA course, CNA test prep, and the driving permit and license workshops.
This role leads Alight's work in the community and helps identify trainings that are needed by our customers, build the content of those trainings out, and iterate on them as you learn to ensure they are providing value to Alight’s customers. You find people where they already are, through resettlement agencies, community organizations, faith communities, schools and events. You build the trust that gets them to a first class, and you teach many of those classes yourself, at Alight and at community sites. The people you serve include refugees and other humanitarian arrivals who are eligible for resettlement services, and other New Americans who aren't.
You are one half of a two-person training team. Your teammate, the Healthcare Workforce & Skill-Building Guide, leads Alight's work with long-term care employers and healthcare training providers. Together you make sure every person gets the training they need, and then a warm handoff to Alight's jobs team. You support the job’s team where your relationship with a person is critical and when it’s necessary based on a variety of factors.
One Training Team
The Community Skill-Building Guide and the Healthcare Workforce & Skill-Building Guide are one team, with the same manager and shared goals. There is more work than one person can do, so each of you has the other's back.
Shared work. You both teach digital literacy and help people earn their certificates. You both recruit people for the PCA course and support them through it.
Taking turns. You take turns leading CNA test prep and the driving permit and license workshops, and you cover each other's classes when one of you can't be there.
One plan. You plan the week together, keep one shared class calendar and sign-up list, and agree on who covers what before it's needed.
Each of you leads an area. The Community Guide leads outreach and workshops in the community and the driving workshops. The Healthcare Guide leads long-term care employer and training-provider relationships and the PCA and CNA pathways. Leading an area means you own it. It doesn't mean the other person stays out of it.
Handoff to the jobs team. When someone finishes a training, you hand them to Alight's jobs team in person, with what you know about them. If your relationship with that person will help them get or keep a job, you keep supporting the jobs team.
