Position Overview

Brooklyn Org seeks a Chief Financial Officer to lead the financial strategy, operations, and stewardship of the Foundation's growing asset base.

Reporting to the President & CEO, and serving as a key member of the Executive Leadership team, this is a pivotal role for a finance leader who understands the mechanics and economics of community foundation finance — particularly Donor Advised Funds (DAF), fund accounting, and investment oversight — and who can translate that fluency into sound modeling, clean reporting, and confident guidance for the CEO and Board.

The ideal candidate has direct experience with DAF administration and fee structures, is comfortable modeling AUM growth and break-even economics across varying gift sizes, and can manage relationships with investment advisors, auditors, and fund administrators with equal ease.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following as needed to meet the goals and objectives:

DAF & Fund Financial Strategy

  • Own the financial modeling for the Foundation's DAF program, including break-even analysis across gift sizes and AUM-based fee structures
  • Partner with program and development leadership to evaluate DAF pricing, minimums, and structure as the program scales
  • Maintain accurate fund-level accounting across DAFs, endowments, designated funds, and legacy giving vehicles, ensuring each fund's restrictions and donor intent are properly tracked

Investment Oversight

  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Investment Committee and outside investment advisors
  • Monitor asset allocation, investment performance, and spending policy against the Foundation's investment policy statement
  • Evaluate and recommend investment managers, custodians, and fund administration vendors as needed

Financial Operations & Reporting

  • Lead annual budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and monthly financial reporting to the Executive Director and Board
  • Ensure timely, accurate close processes and GAAP-compliant financial statements
  • Manage the annual audit and Form 990 preparation in partnership with external auditors and tax advisors

Governance & Board Support

  • Prepare clear, board-ready financial materials, including fund performance summaries and DAF program metrics
  • Advise the Finance and Investment Committees on policy questions, fee structures, and risk
  • Translate complex fund and investment data into materials appropriate for board-level, non-financial audiences

Team & Systems Leadership

  • Oversee accounting, finance, and DAF operations staff
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems, fund accounting software, and DAF administration platforms as the Foundation scales

The Leader:

  • 12+ years of progressive finance leadership experience, with meaningful time at a community foundation, private foundation, or other philanthropic/nonprofit organization preferred.
  • Significant demonstrated expertise in nonprofit financial management, including financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, fund accounting, financial reporting, and the development of effective financial controls and systems.
  • Strong understanding of community foundation financial structures and operations, including knowledge of investment oversight for pooled or endowed assets — asset allocation, manager selection, spending policy, managing restricted and endowed assets, and developing financial models that support sustainable growth, including fee structures and assets under management (AUM).
  • Direct experience administering Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), including fee modeling and fund accounting would be beneficial.
  • Strong command of fund accounting principles (GAAP for nonprofits) and experience managing annual audits, Form 990 preparation, and financial compliance.
  • Experience presenting financial and investment information to a Board or Investment Committee.
  • Proven ability to serve as a strategic financial advisor to executive leadership, translating complex financial information into clear analysis, actionable recommendations, and sound decisions that advance organizational priorities.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling capabilities, with the ability to evaluate financial performance, assess risk, develop long-term projections, and balance financial sustainability with philanthropic objectives.
  • Experience leading and developing a finance and accounting teams, strengthening operational effectiveness, and implementing financial systems, processes, and reporting tools that support organizational growth and accountability.
  • Experience overseeing investment portfolios and working effectively with investment advisors, outsourced Chief Investment Officers (OCIOs), custodians, and other external financial partners. Familiarity with asset allocation, investment performance evaluation, spending policies, and investment governance.
  • A collaborative, solutions-oriented leadership style, sound professional judgment, and the ability to operate both strategically and hands-on within a dynamic, evolving organization.
  • A demonstrated commitment to Brooklyn Org's mission and values, including an understanding of the role that community-centered philanthropy can play in advancing equity, strengthening local institutions, and expanding opportunity across Brooklyn.

Location:

  • Brooklyn, NY (residence in one of the 5 boroughs preferred, to allow for regular work in office)
  • Currently full-time employees are expected to work in the BKO office, located in Downtown Brooklyn, Monday through Thursday with occasional events on Friday.

Compensation:

  • The salary range for this position is $200,000 – $220,000 and is dependent on the successful candidate’s relevant experience.
  • Brooklyn Org has a competitive and exhaustive benefits and leave package.
