
Assistant Youth Program Coordinator
FamilyMeans Youth Development provides free, year-round, out-of-school programming for youth ages 5-18 in the Landfall and Cimarron communities. We provide safe, welcoming spaces where young people build relationships, discover their strengths, explore new interests, develop life skills, and connect with caring adults who support their growth and success. The purpose of this role is to assist Youth Program Coordinators in planning, implementing, and evaluating age-appropriate youth development programming. This position serves as an assistant across all program sites, providing coverage during coordinator absences and supporting sites with the greatest need as determined by the Director of Youth Development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide program coverage at any youth program site as assigned.
- Assist in planning and implementing activities that foster positive personal and social development.
- Develop youth social skills through mentoring, activities, and role modeling.
- Support multiple program sites based on staffing and program needs.
- Assist with supply management and program setup/cleanup.
- Assist with data collection and program evaluation efforts.
- Help maintain relationships with youth, families, and community partners.
- Assist with meal preparation, service, and cleanup as needed.[PS1.1]
- Lead small group activities or oversee designated program areas as assigned.
- Adapt activities to meet varying developmental levels, abilities, and interests of youth.
- Ensure proper supervision of youth in accordance with program policies and licensing requirements.
- Communicate effectively with Program Coordinators and Director regarding site needs, incidents, and successes.
- Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs to Program Coordinators.
- Model respect, empathy, and positive conflict resolution skills.

Qualifications
Education, Licenses and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required. An associate degree or two years of college in a human services field such as: School-Age Care, Child/Youth Development or Elementary Education is preferred.
- Requires current certification in First Aid and CPR or the willingness to become certified upon hire.
Experience
Minimum two years’ experience working with youth, preferably in a youth center or recreation setting is required.
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to relate effectively and in a positive manner with youth and adults from diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
- Proficient in Spanish.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Good written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to read and complete documents such as reports, instructions, and general correspondence.
- Familiarity with technology including computers, camera, and video equipment
- Good mentoring and facilitation skills.
- Commitment to work collaboratively with all staff, volunteers, program participants, and other supporters.
- Flexibility and adaptability across multiple program sites.
Physical and Mental Demands
The mental and physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position
- Frequent standing and walking during program activities.
- Frequent fine motor use of hands during writing, keyboarding or other program activities.
- Visually and audibly monitor youth during activities.
- Bend, stoop, reach and kneel during activities.
- Carry up to 50 pounds while managing supplies.
- Communicate verbally—with participants, staff and over the telephone.
- A valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets agency qualifications is required. This position requires the ability to drive within the service area for supply acquisition, meetings, and activities.
- Exposure to heat, cold, and precipitation during children’s activities.
- Must be able to work independently and apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
- Requires the ability to develop and maintain sensitivity to client diversity and demonstrate respectful treatment of others.
- Must be able to effectively respond to changes in situations or information.
Location: FamilyMeans operates youth programs at two East Metro locations: Landfall, Minnesota, and the Cimarron community in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. This position would provide support at both program sites as needed.
Job Type: Part-Time (20 hours per week), FamilyMeans provides after-school programming during the school year. Program start times vary by location, but part-time shifts are generally scheduled between 2-6pm. During the summer, programs shift to late morning to early afternoon hours.
Pay: This position will pay between $19.33 and $22.25 per hour. Pay will be based on your experience.
Benefits include: PTO, paid holidays, and 403B with a 3% core contribution after one year of service (vesting schedule applies). Due to minimum hourly requirements this position is not eligible for medical, dental or vision benefits.
