Communications and Community Engagement Manager

Position Summary

The Communications and Community Engagement Manager builds and maintains a consistent, practical communications program that strengthens awareness of HavenHouse St. Louis and connects more people to its mission. This is a hands-on role for an experienced communicator who can develop the plan and carry out the work with limited day-to-day supervision.

The manager will create content, organize communications systems, maintain key channels and cultivate community visibility while protecting the dignity and privacy of the patients, families and caregivers HavenHouse serves. The position works closely with the Executive Director, development team, program staff and Volunteer Coordinator, but does not own fundraising strategy, donor solicitation or daily volunteer operations.

Primary Responsibilities

Communications Planning and Brand Stewardship

· Develop and maintain a realistic monthly communications calendar aligned with organizational priorities, fundraising campaigns, volunteer needs and community events.

· Apply HavenHouse messaging, voice and visual standards consistently across communications and recommend improvements when standards or templates are missing.

· Create repeatable processes, templates and content libraries so communications work is organized, sustainable and not dependent on one person’s memory.

· Identify communications opportunities and bring clear recommendations to the Executive Director rather than waiting for individual assignments.

Social Media and Digital Content

· Plan, write, create and schedule content for Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, adapting content appropriately for each audience and platform.

· Maintain a consistent publishing rhythm that balances mission education, patient and family impact, volunteer engagement, meal donor recruitment, community partnerships, events and organizational updates.

· Monitor comments and messages, respond or route inquiries promptly and flag sensitive issues for leadership.

· Make routine website content updates and coordinate outside technical support when changes exceed the position’s expertise or available time.

Storytelling and Content Development

· Build respectful methods for gathering stories, quotes, photographs and program information from patients, families, caregivers, volunteers, staff and community partners.

· Confirm that appropriate permissions and releases are in place before publishing identifiable stories or images.

· Write and edit newsletters, community announcements, website copy, talking points, impact stories and other general communications.

· Maintain an organized, accessible collection of approved photographs, stories, statistics, messages and evergreen content.

Community Engagement and Visibility

· Promote opportunities for individuals, companies, civic groups, faith communities and other organizations to support HavenHouse through meals, volunteer service, in-kind contributions and community involvement.

· Coordinate selected community presentations, tours, outreach activities and awareness opportunities in partnership with staff and leadership.

· Develop relationships with community partners that expand awareness and engagement, while routing fundraising prospects and sponsorship opportunities to the development team.

· Support basic media outreach and coordinate with outside public relations partners when broader media strategy or specialized expertise is needed.

Collaboration and Measurement

· Meet regularly with the Executive Director to confirm priorities, review sensitive content and identify upcoming organizational needs.

· Coordinate with the Director of Development so fundraising campaigns and organizational communications are aligned without duplicating ownership.

· Gather timely information from program and operations staff and translate it into clear, audience-appropriate content.

· Track a focused set of measures, including publishing consistency, audience growth, engagement, website activity and responses to priority calls to action, and use the results to improve future work.

Role Boundaries

This position supports development and organizational initiatives through strong communications, but it is not responsible for:

· Fundraising strategy, donor portfolios, gift solicitation or sponsorship sales.

· Planning and managing every aspect of special events.

· Daily volunteer scheduling, supervision or program operations.

· Providing unlimited graphic design, photography, video production or website development services for every department.

· Publishing patient or family information, crisis communications or sensitive organizational statements without required leadership approval.

First Year Priorities

· Complete an initial review of existing channels, content, access, brand materials and communications practices.

· Establish a manageable communications calendar, approval process and consistent publishing rhythm within the first 60 days.

· Create core templates and a shared content library that staff can use consistently.

· Strengthen HavenHouse’s presence on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn with content tailored to each platform.

· Build a repeatable process for collecting stories and photographs while protecting privacy and dignity.

· Establish a simple quarterly report showing activity, results, lessons and recommended priorities.

Qualifications

· Three or more years of relevant experience in communications, marketing, community engagement, public relations or a related field. Nonprofit experience is strongly preferred.

· Demonstrated ability to plan and execute social media and digital content independently.

· Excellent writing, editing and judgment, with the ability to communicate sensitively about health, hardship and family experiences.

· Strong organization and follow-through, including the ability to manage a part-time workload, set priorities and meet deadlines without frequent supervision.

· Working knowledge of social media scheduling, email marketing, website content management and basic design tools such as Canva.

· Ability to collaborate across departments, receive feedback and maintain clear ownership when priorities overlap.

· Sound discretion with confidential information and a commitment to honoring the dignity of patients, families and caregivers.

Success in This Role

Success will be measured by the quality and consistency of the communications system, not simply by the volume of posts produced. The manager will be successful when:

· HavenHouse communicates consistently across its priority channels.

· Content clearly reflects the mission and the experiences of patients, families and caregivers.

· Community members can readily understand how to engage, volunteer, provide meals or support the organization.

· Staff know how and when to provide information, stories and photographs for communications.

· The Executive Director is providing strategic direction and final judgment on sensitive matters rather than assigning and editing every piece of routine content.

Working Expectations

This role requires regular coordination with staff and periodic presence at HavenHouse activities to gather authentic content and understand the work. The schedule may occasionally include evening or weekend events. Because the position is part-time, the manager is expected to make thoughtful choices about priorities, communicate capacity concerns early and recommend outside support when a request requires specialized expertise or exceeds the available hours.
