CHILDREN’S AND YOUTH CHOIR DIRECTOR
POSITION PURPOSE
The Children’s and/or Youth Choir Director partners with other staff and volunteers to nurture the spiritual formation of children and youth through the learning and making of music. This position helps create a welcoming, joyful, and faith-centered environment where children and youth from the church and wider community can develop their musical gifts, build community, and explore their faith.
Part-Time: 15 hours per week
Reports to: Director of Music and Worship
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and nurture the choir ministry by directing regular rehearsals and creating an encouraging, inclusive, and engaging environment.
Select and teach music that is musically engaging, age-appropriate, and supportive of Christian faith formation, while helping children and youth discover and share their musical gifts as expressions of faith, worship, and service.
Engage children, youth, and families by actively recruiting from the church and surrounding community, encouraging participation, building positive relationships, and working with parents, guardians, and volunteers to support the ministry.
Connect music with worship and ministry by providing musical leadership for worship services, seasonal programs, concerts, musicals, Vacation Bible School, and other opportunities within the life of the church.
Collaborate across ministries with the Director of Family Ministries, the Director of Music and Worship, and other church staff and volunteers to integrate music, worship, and the broader ministry of children and youth, while developing the music ministry in ways that respond to the needs and interests of current and future families.
Support the ministry through communication and organization, including scheduling, planning, communication with families and volunteers, and adherence to KUMC policies, including Safe Sanctuaries requirements.
Perform other duties related to children’s and youth music ministry as assigned by the Director of Music Ministries.
QUALIFICATIONS
Musical proficiency and experience in choral/vocal music.
- Experience and enthusiasm for working with children and/or youth.
Ability to create an encouraging, inclusive, and engaging musical environment.
Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
A commitment to the role of music in Christian worship, community, and spiritual formation.
Degree in music, education, or related field preferred.
HOURS
This position averages 15 hours-per-week. The schedule will include regular Wednesday and Sunday rehearsals as well as worship services, performances, planning, communication, and occasional evening and weekend events.
We are open to splitting this position into two parts. Please let us know if you are interested in only the Children’s or youth role.
