The Opportunity:

The Substitute Classroom Aide should have previous experience working with preschool-aged children. Our candidate will be warm, patient, dependable, and able to respond flexibly to classroom needs. They will have an understanding of, or willingness to learn, play-based, child-centered teaching practices and the ability to work cooperatively as part of a teaching team.

The Substitute Classroom Aide provides classroom coverage when a regular teacher is absent. The substitute works collaboratively with preschool staff to maintain a safe, nurturing, and engaging play-based learning environment. This position follows established classroom routines and supports children’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development through positive interactions and developmentally appropriate activities. The Village Preschool enrolls students ages 3-5 and is open September through May. One preschool class meets twice during the week from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm, one prekindergarten class meets twice during the week from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm and once during the week from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. There would be one other Preschool Educator in the classes with the Substitute Classroom Aide.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide classroom coverage on scheduled substitute days.

    • Follow lesson plans, classroom routines, and guidance provided by the regular teacher or Lead Early Childhood Development Educator.

    • Supervise children closely and maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

    • Engage children in play-based learning experiences.

    • Support children during arrival, transitions, snack, toileting, handwashing, cleanup, and dismissal.

    • Use positive, developmentally- appropriate guidance strategies to help children manage emotions, solve problems, and interact successfully with others.

    • Respond calmly and appropriately to children’s individual needs.

    • Maintain professional and respectful communication with children, families, and staff.

    • Follow all preschool policies and procedures related to health, safety, confidentiality, and mandated reporting.

    • Assist with preparing materials and restoring the classroom at the end of the program day.

  • Communicate relevant information about the morning to the regular teacher or Lead Early Childhood Development Educator.Physical Requirements:

    The substitute aide must be able to actively supervise young children indoors and outdoors; sit on the floor; bend, kneel, and move throughout the classroom; and lift or assist a child when necessary.

Qualifications

Required Education, Credentials & Clearances:

    • Bachelor’s Degree

    • Pennsylvania Criminal History Check.

    • Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance.

    • Federal Criminal History Check/FBI Fingerprinting.

    • Trained in CPR & First Aid
