We envision a people-powered democracy actively dismantling systemic racism and removing all barriers to full participation in our government.

The Community Organizer works to empower, educate, and mobilize League members and the communities we serve.

Goals and Responsibilities: 

The League is seeking a full-time Community Organizer to mobilize members, supporters, volunteers, organizations, and the public around the League’s democracy and civic engagement initiatives. This position will work across teams, dedicating time to both community organizing and civic engagement programs, as well as Census 2030 and redistricting initiatives. The organizer will help educate community members and partner organizations about the importance of an accurate Census, fair representation, and early preparation efforts leading up to 2030. With the support and guidance of other program and organizing staff, the Community Organizer will:

• Mobilize and educate the public, League members, and partners to engage in the 2030 Census and New Jersey’s redistricting process.
• Develop and lead trainings, workshops, presentations, and community listening sessions to educate, mobilize, and empower community members and partners around Census 2030, redistricting, and civic engagement efforts.
• Lead GOTV and voter engagement efforts, including door-to-door canvassing, direct mail, text and phone banking, and voter registration and education.
• Using organizing and power-building tactics, foster greater candidate accountability and accessibility.
• Support and develop various programs designed to empower the community including Observer Corps, Legislative Interviews, and the Activist Training Program.
• Offer organizing support to help achieve legislative and advocacy goals.
• Grow volunteer leadership and capacity at the state and local levels.
• Build League power through growing membership, supporting existing chapters, and adding new chapters.
• Spend time in NJ communities building relationships and directly organizing League networks.

Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate is a coalition-builder with an understanding of New Jersey’s diverse communities and a dedication to building an inclusive democracy. With a deep commitment to racial, social, and economic justice, the League’s Community Organizer is a team-player well versed in winning organizing tactics. The candidate connects with our mission and is excited to find a small work environment with room for growth.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster relationships with various stakeholders
  

  A commitment to coalition building

• 1-2 years of organizing/voter engagement experience or equivalent education preferred but not required
• Organized, strategic, detail oriented, and driven to meet goals
• A confident and comfortable public speaker
• Ability to travel throughout the state and flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to support community events, meetings, trainings, and voter engagement activities

Salary and Benefits:  

The salary for this position is $45,000 – $50,000. This is a hybrid position and applicants can expect approximately 2-3 days a week on-site in our Trenton, NJ office or in the field. The position involves travel during and outside of normal business hours and requires some evening and weekend organizing work. The work week is 37.5 hours.

Benefits include 100% employer paid comprehensive health and dental plans for individual employees plus partial family coverage, life insurance, vision reimbursement, and wellness/fitness reimbursement. In addition, generous time off includes 20 PTO days, 12 sick days, 3 self-care days, 2 volunteer service days, 90 days of parental leave, and a 30-day sabbatical after 5 years of service to the organization.
