The role
This is a job for an experienced business or nonprofit attorney who wants to keep practicing and also wants to build something. If developing newer attorneys is the part of your work you most enjoy, this role makes it a formal part of the job.
You will carry your own matters, supervise our staff attorneys and legal interns, and help shape how a regional pro bono program delivers its services. You set the standard for the legal work, you are the person our staff and volunteers come to with the hard questions, and your judgment shapes what thousands of clients across Minnesota and the surrounding states receive. For a full job description visit https://legalcorps.org/employment/.
What you will do
- Supervise staff attorneys, legal interns, and externs, providing mentorship, training, and honest performance feedback.
- Set and maintain the standard for legal work quality across the organization and build the kind of team people stay on.
- Provide substantive guidance to volunteer attorneys and help develop and deliver CLE programs on transactional business and nonprofit law.
- Provide brief advice and limited scope representation to entrepreneurs, small businesses, startups, and nonprofits, counseling on entity selection, formation, governance, contracting, employment, liability, and compliance.
- Review nonprofit records, including articles, bylaws, governance documents, and tax filings, and assess regulatory risk.
- Partner with the Programs Director to recruit, engage, and retain volunteer attorneys, and to build relationships with firms and corporate legal departments.
- Maintain relationships with governmental and regulatory agencies, and contribute to program development, strategic priorities, grant-funded work, and impact reporting.
What you bring
If you meet most of these and are interested in this work, we encourage you to apply. We would rather read your cover letter and have a conversation.
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, and licensed and in good standing in Minnesota or eligible for admission by reciprocity.
- At least five years practicing law, with significant experience in business, transactional, or nonprofit matters.
- A track record of managing complex matters independently and giving practical, client-centered advice.
- Strong research, drafting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to balance legal risk, client objectives, and practical constraints, and to teach others to do the same.
- Good judgment about priorities when several matters are moving at once.
- A real commitment to serving low-income clients, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations, and willingness to travel within Minnesota.
Helpful, but not required. Experience advising tax-exempt organizations on governance and compliance. Formal supervisory or team leadership experience; if you have mentored newer attorneys in an informal capacity, tell us about it, because that experience counts here. Knowledge of Minnesota resources available to entrepreneurs, small businesses, inventors, and nonprofits. Public speaking and legal education experience. A language in addition to English, particularly Spanish, Hmong, or Somali.
Why attorneys come to LegalCORPS
Our team came here from private practice, in-house roles, government, and other nonprofits, driven by mission. Here is how the work is structured.
- No billable hours. Our services are free to the people we serve, so the role carries no billable hour requirement and no origination expectations.
- A sustainable caseload. We set caseloads deliberately, so you have time to do careful work and keep regular hours.
- Clients you meet in person. You sit across from the people you are helping, often at the moment a decision matters most.
- Real autonomy. You manage your own matters and make your own judgment calls, with colleagues available for a second opinion.
- A schedule that bends. Hybrid, with [2 to 3] days per week in the office. We are flexible about which days and about the hours you keep around them.
- Leadership you can exercise. We are a small organization running an ambitious set of programs. Your judgment about how services should be delivered will shape what we do.
