About North Country Animal League
North Country Animal League (NCAL) is a growing animal shelter in central Vermont, with big plans and an even bigger mission. We’re in a season of real momentum — new capital projects, new donor support, and a clear vision to make a bigger impact for animals and people in our community than ever before. We’re looking for the right person to help us get there.
About the Role
This is a big job. We’re looking for a Director of Fundraising to run our development department day to day — someone who’s dedicated, animal-loving, hard-working, and genuinely good at solving problems. You’ll own how we raise the money that keeps this organization running and growing, so our Executive Director can stay focused on advancement and expansion, and the next chapter for NCAL.
This isn’t an entry-level role. We need someone who’s done this before and knows what they’re doing. Someone who can walk in, see what’s working, see what isn’t, and build on it.
You’ll report directly to our Executive Director and work closely with him every day. You’ll also manage at least one direct report, so you’ll be leading people as well as raising money. You will co-chair our events committee.
What You’ll Do
- Run NCAL’s development department and lead our day-to-day fundraising efforts — events, annual giving, major donors, campaigns, and everything in between
- Build and manage relationships with donors, large and small, with the same warmth and honesty that got them to trust us in the first place
- Plan and execute fundraising campaigns and appeals that actually connect with people
- Tell NCAL’s story — in writing, online, and in person — in a way that moves people to act
- Partner with our marketing and communications support on outreach, messaging, and materials (you won’t be doing the bulk of that work solo, but you need to be comfortable in that world)
- Help maintain and update our website and donor-facing content
- Represent NCAL at events, presentations, and in front of donors and community groups. Public speaking is part of the job
- Track and report on fundraising progress, and bring ideas for what’s next
What We’re Looking For
- At least 5 years of professional fundraising or development experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role where you managed people and ran a department or program
- Comfortable managing a $1 million to $3 million fundraising budget
- Capital campaign experience with proven results. This is a big plus for us.
- Real, proven experience in development/fundraising. You know what you’re doing
- A genuine love for animals and a connection to our mission
- A hard-working, dedicated, problem-solving mindset. You figure things out
- Marketing and communications experience
- Tech savvy — this is a must
- WordPress and basic web design skills are a nice-to-have
- A natural storyteller, comfortable writing and speaking about NCAL’s work
- Confidence with public speaking. You’ll represent NCAL in the community
- Someone who wants to help NCAL make a bigger impact for animals and people than ever before
