Overview:
Bethel Hills is an all-inclusive faith-based community near Washington, Missouri, where adults with and without developmental disabilities live, learn, and worship together. Inour first three years, we set very ambitious goals and achieved results that far exceeded expectations. We are an organization committed to making the world a better place for the neurodiverse community we serve.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Activities & Recreation Manager develops and leads a creative, inclusive, and engaging activities program for Bethel Hills’ 25 residents. Bethel Hills is a Christian community where adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities live, learn, worship, and participate in community life together.
The successful candidate will be creative, energetic, compassionate, organized, and dependable, with a genuine desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of adults with varying intellectual, developmental, and physical abilities.
The Manager will build strong relationships with residents, understand their individual interests and abilities, and create meaningful experiences that promote friendship, participation, independence, confidence, and belonging.
This position is about more than filling a calendar. It is about creating an active, welcoming community where every resident has opportunities to participate, grow, connect, and feel valued.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Activities & Resident Engagement
- Develop and lead a varied activities program based on resident interests, abilities, and preferences.
- Provide interactive activities such as games, cooking and baking, arts and crafts, gardening, nature activities, walks, music, movies, educational programs, sports, and recreation.
- Provide a mix of small-group and larger activities appropriate for different interests and ability levels.
- Create opportunities that encourage friendship, social interaction, skill development, independence, and confidence.
- Build positive relationships with residents and become familiar with their interests, abilities, limitations, and communication styles.
- Encourage participation while respecting individual choices and preferences.
- Regularly seek resident input and incorporate feedback into future programming.
- Help strengthen a Christian community in which residents encourage, support, and care for one another.
Community Events
- Plan and lead one community event each month for Bethel Hills residents, families, friends, volunteers, and members of the broader community.
- Create events that are welcoming, inclusive, interactive, and appropriate for varying ability levels.
- Use events to strengthen relationships, build community, and introduce others to the mission and spirit of Bethel Hills.
- Coordinate activities, supplies, facilities, refreshments, and volunteers needed for successful events.
- Encourage resident, family, and community participation and use feedback to improve future events.
Planning, Communication & Accountability
- Prepare a monthly activities calendar that is varied, purposeful, well-organized, and responsive to resident interests and needs.
- Plan sufficiently in advance to ensure supplies, equipment, facilities, and volunteers are available.
- Coordinate activities with other Bethel Hills programs, schedules, and community priorities.
- Communicate activity and event plans clearly and in a timely manner.
- Continually introduce new activities and experiences rather than relying on repetitive programming.
- Participate in the implementation and execution of the Bethel Hills Strategic Plan, particularly goals and initiatives related to resident engagement, community development, spiritual growth, and the successful integration of new residents into the Bethel Hills community.
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, committees, and Board members to support organizational priorities and strategic initiatives.
- Demonstrate strong organization, initiative, follow-through, and accountability for assigned responsibilities.
SCHEDULE AND AVAILABILITY
This is a part-time position averaging 22 hours per week that requires flexibility based on resident schedules, programs, and community needs.
Bethel Hills expects this position to be the Manager’s primary employment commitment. Bethel Hills responsibilities and scheduling needs are expected to take priority over other part-time employment or outside work commitments. Outside employment must not interfere with the Manager’s assigned schedule, availability, community events, or responsibilities at Bethel Hills.
Because several residents work during the day, the Manager’s schedule will include:
- Late-afternoon and early-evening hours.
- A minimum of two Saturdays each month, with additional Saturday availability when needed for special events or community activities.
- Leadership of the monthly community event, including events scheduled on weekends.
- Occasional schedule adjustments for holidays, special events, and other community needs.
This is not a strictly daytime position. The Manager is expected to structure their work schedule around the times when residents are most available, including regular evening and Saturday programming.
MEASURES OF SUCCESS
- Strong resident participation and engagement in activities that reflect individual interests, preferences, and abilities.
- Meaningful and inclusive programming that provides opportunities for residents of all ability levels to feel valued, challenged, encouraged, and connected.
- Creative, well-planned programming during afternoons, evenings, and weekends that continually evolves in response to resident and community needs.
- Successful monthly community events that are organized, engaging, inclusive, and supported by effective volunteer participation.
- Positive relationships and a strong sense of community among residents, families, volunteers, staff, and others involved with Bethel Hills.
Bethel Hills is an equal opportunity employer. We provide a welcoming and inclusive environment in service to one another, the diverse consumers we serve, and the communities we call home. We do all of this with kindness, empathy, and respect for each other.
