Position Type: Part-time, hybrid

Location: St. Louis, Missouri

Salary: $25,000-$28,000 annually

The Opportunity

Dance Moves STL is seeking a creative, organized Communications Specialist to bring our mission and impact to life through compelling stories, engaging content, and strong visual communications.

This is a hands-on role with the opportunity to shape how Dance Moves STL shares its story with schools, families, donors, partners, and the broader community. The Communications Specialist will manage our primary communications channels and create content that captures the energy of our programs and the difference they make in young people’s lives.

Working closely with the Executive Director, Program Manager, and Development Manager, this person will have meaningful ownership of day-to-day communications while contributing to the visibility and growth of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Storytelling & Digital Communications

    • Develop and manage a consistent communications and content calendar.

    • Create engaging content for social media, including stories, graphics, photography, and short-form video.

    • Produce the monthly Creating Connections electronic newsletter.

    • Gather stories, photographs, testimonials, and program highlights that demonstrate Dance Moves STL’s impact.

    • Maintain timely and engaging website content.

    • Monitor audience engagement and use insights to strengthen communications.

Marketing & Events

    • Create attractive print and digital materials for programs, school outreach, events, and community engagement.

    • Promote student performances, community activities, fundraising events, and the annual Colors of the Rainbow Team Match Championship.

    • Develop event communications and materials, including invitations, programs, signage, presentations, and digital promotion.

    • Attend and capture photos and content at select programs and events.

    • Maintain a consistent and recognizable Dance Moves STL voice and visual identity.

Fundraising & Impact Communications

    • Partner with the Development Manager to create compelling communications that support fundraising campaigns, sponsorships, and donor stewardship bringing those efforts to life through storytelling and design.

    • Turn student stories, program outcomes, testimonials, and data into engaging donor and community-facing content.

    • Create and design sponsorship materials, campaign communications, impact updates, and other fundraising collateral.

Community Visibility

    • Identify creative opportunities to increase awareness of Dance Moves STL throughout the St. Louis region.

    • Develop press releases, media pitches, and organizational announcements as opportunities arise.

    • Support media coverage, partnerships, and other opportunities to share the Dance Moves STL story.

    • Prepare communications materials and talking points for the Executive Director as needed.

What Success Looks Like

In the first year, the Communications Specialist will help Dance Moves STL achieve:

    • Consistent, engaging communications across social media, email, and the website.

    • A strong monthly newsletter that keeps the Dance Moves STL community informed and connected.

    • A growing collection of compelling stories, photographs, and impact content.• High-quality, consistent marketing and event materials.

    • Stronger integration of program stories, fundraising communications, and organizational messaging.

    • Increased visibility and engagement throughout the St. Louis community.

Key Qualifications:

We’re looking for a creative storyteller and proactive doer who enjoys taking an idea from concept to finished product.

Ideal candidates will bring:

    • 2+ years of experience in communications, marketing, social media, public relations, or a related field.

    • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.

    • Experience creating content for social media, email, and digital platforms.

    • Strong visual instincts and proficiency with Canva or similar design tools.

    • Basic photography and short-form video skills.

    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects independently.

    • A collaborative spirit and comfort working within a small, mission-driven team.

    • Availability for occasional evening or weekend events.

    • Enthusiasm for youth development, education, dance, the arts, or community-based nonprofit work.

    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, graphic design, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will also be considered.

The Ideal Candidate:

Notices the moments that tell a story—a student gaining confidence, a classroom coming together, or the energy of a performance—and knows how to turn them into content that makes people want to learn more.

Enjoys variety: writing a story, creating an Instagram post, photographing a program, designing an event piece, or helping translate impact into a compelling message. Most importantly, this person will help more people understand how social dance creates connection, builds confidence, and helps young people thrive.

About Dance Moves STL

Dance Moves STL is a nonprofit youth development and arts education organization whose mission is to cultivate essential life skills in children through the joyful art and practice of social dance. Through school-based dance programming, Dance Moves STL helps young people develop confidence, cooperation, empathy, respect, cultural awareness, and meaningful connections with their peers.
