Abstract

We are seeking an accomplished, entrepreneurial marketing and communications leader who takes ownership, spots opportunities, and turns strategy into action and measurable results. This person will bring vision, initiative, and drive to elevate JBRPC's profile, expand its reach, and build greater engagement and support for its mission.

Organizational Overview

Jamaica Bay is New York City’s largest and most ecologically productive open space—an unparalleled oasis of nature covering 44 square miles of open water, tidal wetlands, and coastal parklands, altogether twice the size of Manhattan. It directly serves more than 1 million New Yorkers in adjacent Queens and Brooklyn neighborhoods and more than 3 million within its watershed. Established in 2012, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) is a unique public-private partnership working across city, state and federal agencies to improve public parklands for enjoyment and ecosystem health. JBRPC brings together diverse community stakeholders, elected officials, academic researchers and others to advance this shared mission.

Position Overview

JBRPC seeks an experienced Director of Marketing & Communications to lead and grow the organization's marketing and communications function. This is a strategic leadership role with end-to-end responsibility for setting direction, establishing priorities, developing and executing integrated plans, and delivering measurable results that expand JBRPC’s visibility, reach, and engagement. The Director will take an entrepreneurial approach to identifying opportunities, building audiences, and generating greater awareness and support for the organization’s work.

The Director joins JBRPC at an exciting period of growth, as we expand our core programming while advancing the adaptive reuse of historic Hangars 3 & 4 and reactivation of Floyd Bennett Field—a major initiative that will create a new platform to significantly expand JBRPC’s programs, reach, and impact while introducing new opportunities for research, restoration, and public use.

Reporting to the Deputy Director and working closely with colleagues across the organization, the Director will lead an integrated marketing and communications strategy spanning brand and storytelling, digital communications, media relations, program and event promotion, and audience growth. As JBRPC’s senior marketing and communications professional, the Director will exercise independent judgment, drive initiatives from concept through implementation, and remain directly involved in execution, coordinating internal and external resources as appropriate and evaluating performance to continuously improve results.

Core Responsibilities

Strategy, Brand & Promotion

  • Lead the development and execution of an integrated marketing and communications strategy that advances JBRPC's organizational priorities, strengthens its brand, expands audiences, and drives measurable engagement and support.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities to elevate JBRPC's visibility and influence through campaigns, partnerships, program promotion, media engagement, and timely issues relevant to its mission.

  • Establish communications priorities, plans, and workflows that translate organizational goals into coordinated action and results.

Content & Digital Communications

  • Direct JBRPC’s editorial strategy and digital presence across social media, email, website, and other channels, maintaining a compelling and consistent organizational voice and visual identity.

  • Develop and execute content and promotional campaigns, personally producing written and visual materials, coordinating outside creative resources as needed, and managing paid digital advertising.

Media Relations & External Communications

  • Lead proactive media relations, identifying and pitching stories, cultivating relationships with journalists and outlets, and developing press releases, talking points, and other materials.

  • Build relationships with media, cultural organizations, community partners, and other aligned organizations to amplify JBRPC's work and reach new audiences.

Analytics & Performance

  • Establish and monitor meaningful performance metrics across communications channels and campaigns, using data and audience feedback to evaluate effectiveness, refine strategies, and improve results.

Organizational Collaboration & Execution

  • Work across JBRPC’s program areas to identify communications opportunities and develop strategies that advance organizational priorities, programs, events, partnerships, and major initiatives.

  • Manage communications projects, timelines, and outside resources from concept through delivery, including selected fundraising, sponsorship, and major-project materials developed in collaboration with colleagues.

Essential Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field, including demonstrated ownership of marketing and communications initiatives.

  • Proven ability to independently develop and implement integrated marketing and communications strategies, translating organizational objectives into actionable plans, effective campaigns, and measurable results.

  • Demonstrated success expanding organizational visibility, reaching and engaging new audiences, and strengthening brand awareness through proactive marketing and communications.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing paid digital advertising strategies and campaigns, including audience targeting, budget management, campaign optimization, and performance evaluation across platforms such as Google Ads and social media advertising.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, storytelling, and creative judgment, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and compellingly to diverse audiences.

  • Strong digital marketing and communications expertise, including social media, email marketing, website content, campaign management, and performance analytics.

  • Experience with media relations, visual communications, and content development, including proficiency with tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Excellent organizational, project management, and interpersonal skills, with the judgment, initiative, and ability to set priorities, solve problems, collaborate effectively, and drive projects to completion independently.

  • Experience working in a nonprofit or other mission-driven environment, with an appreciation for JBRPC's mission and the ability to thrive in a small, entrepreneurial organization.

  • The ability to travel to and between the parks throughout JBRPC's service area.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in environmental conservation, parks, sustainability, environmental education, arts and culture, or related mission-driven fields.

  • Familiarity with website content management systems, email marketing platforms, digital analytics tools, and CRM systems.

  • Experience developing communications—including materials—that support nonprofit fundraising, sponsorships, or major organizational initiatives.

  • Skills in photography, reels / video production, and multimedia storytelling.

  • Familiarity with New York City communities, public parks, environmental issues, and/or public agency partnerships.

  • Driver’s license a plus.
