Job Title: Food Service Cook

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Job Status: Full-Time Regular

Reports To: Food Service Director

Location: St. Paul, MN

Hours: 5am – 1pm or 11am – 7pm; Must work every-other weekend; Must be flexible to work either shift as scheduled

Pay Range: $19.25 - $22.00 per hour

Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities (UGMTC) provides emergency shelter, food, basic needs and wraparound programs for people facing homelessness, hunger and addiction in the community. Located in Saint Paul, UGMTC opened its doors in 1902 and has been feeding, sheltering and offering the hope of Jesus Christ to people in need ever since.

Food Services prepares and serves three hot, wholesome, and healthy meals each day, 365 days a year. Providing hundreds of meals each day and thousands at Thanksgiving, Food Services plays an essential role in meeting the tangible needs of men, women, and children at UGMTC and in the community.


POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Cook performs a variety of kitchen duties involved with cooking and preparing hot foods, cold foods, and beverages for a within a large residential cooking environment. Executes day-to-day activities including cleaning work areas, washing dishes, equipment, and utensils, set up, service and collection of garbage. Operates computer to ensure residents are accounted for at each meal period.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • At the direction of the Food Services Director, carry out established Food Service processes and procedures in alignment with UGMTC’s mission and values.
  • Prepare and serve a range including hot and cold meat and vegetable dishes, salads, sandwiches, simple bakery items, beverages and other similar food items.
  • Adjust the established menu when perishable items are donated.
  • Follow standard procedures for kitchen safety and safe food handling.
  • Convey food and supplies from kitchen to service area.
  • Replenish food, silverware, dishes, and trays at serving stations.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintaining work areas, including floors, facilities, utensils, and equipment; collect and places garbage in designated containers.
  • Assist with washing and sanitizing pots, pans, and other serviceware ensuring sanitary handling; organize and replace the serviceware to appropriate location.
  • Handle daily issues related to equipment and food supplies; identify and ensure disposal of spoiled food, and report defective supplies or equipment to the Kitchen Manager.
  • Provide a welcoming and safe environment for residents, staff and volunteers.
  • Work with volunteers to ensure proper food handling, safety procedures and service to residents.
  • Maintain co-operative relationships and communication with teams and other departments to ensure access and positive experiences for UGMTC residents and achievement of program objectives.
  • At any time, with or without notice, perform other duties and activities as assigned.

MINIMUMJOBREQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience; Culinary Arts degree preferred.
  • 1 year of cooking experience in an institutional environment or restaurant; additional cooking experience preferred.
  • ServSafe or equivalent certification within 60 days of date of hire.
  • Able to work flexible hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, and holidays or weekends.
  • Experience or desire to work with individuals experiencing mental health issues, homelessness, poverty, or addiction.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of food service line set-up and temperature requirements.
  • Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards.
  • Good judgment, self-control, and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to read, understand, use, and follow safety and other specific instructions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of issues impacting people experiencing homelessness, underserved or at-risk communities.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a culturally diverse community.
  • Team and customer service oriented; work collaboratively with staff in the coordination of Food Service activities.
  • Follow program guidelines and offer suggestions for improvement.
  • Ability to read, write and follow routine verbal and written instructions.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Work is normally performed in a kitchen environment with exposure to temperature fluctuation, kitchen hazards, and varying conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds consistently, and occasionally lift over 30 pounds.
  • Work requires standing for long periods of time and repetitive movements.
  • Work requires pushing, pulling, reaching, crouching, depth perception, stooping, standing, walking, twisting, carrying, and other physical activities.
  • Moderate exposure to physical risk.
